The Ministry of Education has selected 973 temporary teachers for permanent positions.

Education Minister Antonio da Conceição said that those selected had fulfilled the criteria and completed a bachelor degree.
Temporary teachers are those without formal qualifications and employed by the ministry on an as-needed basis.
More than 3000 teachers who do not fulfill the ministry’s criteria are now attending additional training so that they qualify for permanent positions.
The Parliament allocated $98 million to the Ministry of Education in the national budget, of which more than $70 million is for staff wages.
Meanwhile, President of Commission F (responsible for health, culture, education, veteran affairs and gender equality) MP Virgilio da Costa Hornai said the ministry had the authority to change teachers’ status once they had met the relevant criteria.
He said that although many teachers still didn’t not fulfill the educational requirements, schools still needed them due to a shortage in teachers.
“To ensure education quality we should think about it,” he said.
Included in the annual budget this year was a special budget to cover teachers’ salaries.
