The President of Commission E (Infrastructure, Transport and Communication) of the National Parliament, MP Pedro dos Martires da Costa claims KAFI (Commission for the Administration of Infrastructure) failed its duty to control the process of construction of the Baucau Referral Hospital that even after four year has not yet concluded.

The President of Commission E (Infrastructure, Transport and Communication) of the National Parliament, MP Pedro dos Martires da Costa.

The MP was disappointed with how slow construction has been despite the large amounts of funds already spent.

“I believe it was a lack of control, of supervision and of proper planning. Also the wrong company was chosen. It has no capital to mobilize equipment and was waiting for government funds,” said MP Martires at the National Parliament, Dili.

He added that despite annual pledges out of the budget of US$5 million that the construction of the hospital has not concluded and that the Baucau Referral Hospital was meant to be the example for other big infrastructure projects.

Meanwhile Deputy Health Minister Natalia de Araujo said even though the owner of the Baucau Referral Hospital construction project was under her ministry that the actual construction was to be the responsibility of KAFI.

“KAFI is responsible for it not the Ministry of Health,” said De Araujo.

TDW tried to get a comment from a KAFI representative but none was available to speak to the media.
