A budget blowout is to blame for delays to the Dili-Ainaro road construction project.
Member of Parliament Albina Marcal said the work was scheduled to be completed this year.
“We don’t know what the problem is,” she said in Parliament.
The work was commissioned after Commission E (infrastructure, transport and communications) monitoring revealed the road’s poor condition was preventing residents undertaking their activities.
Marcal called on the Public Works Ministry to take responsibility and deliver the road upgrades.
Public Works Minister Gastao Sousa said they were waiting for final approvals before work began.
He said the budget for the project had increased, meaning higher levels of scrutiny had to be applied.
Sousa said the Ministry planned to compensate farmers who had coffee crops growing along the road’s planned path.
