A man has faced court for hitting his partner after becoming jealous after seeing her holding hands with another man.

The victim (MK) told the court that the incident occurred on August 7, 2015 at 12pm when the accused went to pick her up at college. At that time she was sitting with some friends and as the accused came towards her he saw one of her male friends suddenly hold her hand while they were discussing a university matter.

The accused became angry and jealous as the victim’s friend continued holding her hand throughout the conversation.

“On the way home, the accused was angry, but I just kept quiet,” she said in court.

She said that when they returned home the accused had insulted her and questioned her about her relationship with her friend.

“He insulted me, then said he was my boyfriend, and he hit me and twisted my hand,” she said.

When asked by the presiding judge for his response to the accusations, the accused said only that he agreed with the facts as presented to the court.

The public defender said it was the first time the accused had committed such an offence and he was jealous at the time.

Meanwhile, the representative for the prosecution called on the court to impose a suitable sentence as a deterrent to the accused from repeating his actions in the future.

After hearing the victim’s declaration, the presiding judge handed down a one-year suspended sentence.
