The National Electoral Commission (CNE) has conducted an educational campaign about the electoral process for secondary students.

CNE commissioner Joana Dulce Vitor said it was important for all citizens to understand their electoral system and enroll to vote.

“We have almost covered all 13 districts to impart awareness to the students so they, as new electors, know about their right to vote,” she said in Fatuhada.

Vitor said topics covered included the electoral system as well as how to enrol to vote and the importance of women’s participation in politics

CNE has made a recommendation to the Ministry of Education to include civic education subjects in the national curriculum, he said.

Student Armandina de Araujo voiced her thanks for the program as it helped to open her and her fellow students’ minds to Timor-Leste’s electoral and enrollment processes.
