The Dili District Court handed down prison sentences to three convicted drug traffickers captured by the Special Crimes Investigations (SIK) Unit of the National Police PNTL during raids conducted in 2012.
“Some got six years and others got eight years,” said Chief Gonzaga in KaikoliDili.
According to him the traffickers were charged with trying to smuggled drugs into the country and with trying to traffic drugs out of the country to Indonesia.
Two other arrests were made in 2013 and the cases are pending a court decision.
He added the arrests followed long term investigations after the police received information drug smugglers were trying to bring drugs into the country.
Member of Parliament MP Bendita Moniz Magno said she was appreciative of the work of SIK in identifying and arresting those trying to smuggle drugs into the country.
“The police should capture them and make them accountable for their crimes,” said MP Magno.
She urged SIK to be vigilant and keep their investigationson-going because drugs can easily be smuggled into the country.
