Drainage works that started through the Ministry of Public Works in four suburbs of Dili in March are not yet finished.

Drainage works that started in four suburbs of Dili in March are still not finished.

The Secretary of State for Public Works Luis Vaz Rodrigues said the work was currently underway.

“The work I saw in Becora is underway without any problems and now they’re trying to keep improving, as the drains are very small, so they should make an effort to make them bigger,” said Secretary of State Rodrigues in Mandarin, Dili.

He said the company BTK Uni Pessoal was doing works near Becora Technical School, Audian and the Chinese Cemetary while the company Samudra Uni Pessoal was working in Kaikoli.

He said it was necessary to enlarge small drains in the four suburbs because the volume of water was a lot bigger when it rained.

He said he didn’t know the progress of the project because the companies hadn’t reported to him.

On the other hand, Member of Parliament Mateus de Jesus recognized the four suburbs could have trouble with flooding in the rainy season.

“Because of this, it’s a good initiative to enlarge the drains and maintain leaky pipes so the water can flow better,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kaikoli resident Tomas Fernandes said he hoped the flooding wouldn’t happen again in the future, and he asked the government to enlarge the drains because Kaikoli was often filled with water after the rain.
