The Ministry of Public Worksis carrying out urgent repairs on bridges and roads damaged due to heavy rain during the natural disaster a few months ago, especially in Viqueque district.

The Ministry of Public Works is sending consultants to each district to look at how many roads and bridges were destroyed in the natural disaster.

Secretary of State for Public Works Luis Vas Rodrigues said the heavy rain affected communities on the south coast, for example in Viqueque town andthe sub-districts of Watulari and Watucarbauthere are a lot of roads and bridged destroyed.

He said this also happened in Covalima and Lospalos districts.

“Currently the construction companies have stopped their work, but they are waiting for the consultants to produce a design with a BOQ to identify the bridges and roads that should be fixed first,” said Secretary of State Rodrigues in Dili.

He added the ministry would send a consultant to each district to look collect data on how many roads and bridges were destroyed in the natural disaster.

“So we know how much money to spend per district,” said the Secretary of State.

On the other hand, Member of Parliament Inacio Moreira said he supported the government’s initiative to carry out emergency works because the community needs these roads and bridges.

“But they must study this and do a proper design, not just say it’s an emergency and do it randomly, it’s an emergency but there should be quality results,” said MP Moreira.

Meanwhile, Suai resident Isaias Sarmento said the area he lived in was destroyed which made them sad, and the roads and electricity poles were also destroyed so he called on the government to take urgent action.
