The Criminal Scientific Investigation Police (CSIP) has launched an investigation into four containers filled with liquor recently seized at Dili port.

Criminal Scientific Investigation Police (CSIP), to open investigation into four containers of liquor.

Head of investigations Adino Nunes Cabral said the containers were seized on April 23 following an order from Dili municipality court based on information provided by Customs.

Cabral also expressed concern about an increase in crime if large quantities of alcohol were to become available on the market.

He said the investigation would determine whether or not the liquor was imported illegally from Singapore.

The findings will then be passed on to the department of prosecution, he said.

National MP Cesar Valente agreed that an investigation was necessary.

“Maybe they broke some regulations and such liquors should not be imported,” he said.

He therefore called for the CSIP to conduct a rigorous investigation to determine why the liquor was imported and where it was to be distributed.

Paz University (UNPAZ) student Manuel Barros said while he didn’t have a problem with Timor importing alcohol from other countries, it shouldn’t be permitted in such large quantities.

He also questioned the legality of importing alcohol in such large volumes and urged the government to look into the issue.
