The Rector of the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e (UNTL) Aurelio Guterres inducted eight Timorese PhD scholars to a high level university council to support restructuring and improve the faculties at the academic institution.
According to Rector Guterres, he hopes better academics will be prepared through the appointment of the university’s new PhD Council structure.
“The university needs sophisticated people and to prepare human resources with new structures so the work of the university can be more dynamic,” said UNTL’s Rector Guterres in Dili.
The mandate of the PhD Council will be to strengthen the work of administration and finances at the university.
The PhD Council is composed by 8 scholars: Dr. Samuel Freitas (Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences), Dr. Eurico Araujo (Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences), Dr. Angelo Carascalao (Dean of the Faculty of Law), Dr. Joao Martins (Dean of the Faculty of Medicine), Dr. Fernando Baptista (Dean of the Faculty of Economy), Dr. Pedro Soares (Dean of the Faculty of Education), Dr. Mariano Renato (Dean of the Faculty of Engineering), and Dr. Acacio Amaral (Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture).
The President of the PhD Council, Dr. Francisco Miguel Martins said the establishment of the new council is a first for the university and that council members will focus their efforts on improving the university’s work.
“We will focus in particular on academic issues and on how academia is administered within the university.”
Lecturer Dr. Antero Benedito da Silva urged the members of the new council at UNTL to focus on strengthening the work of each individual faculty.
“I believe eight deans who assumed the new roles must first become familiar with the pedagogy of the university and look also at the work systems to improve the administration of the university,” said Dr. Antero.
He added UNTL lecturers are ready to support the eight deans deliver on their vision.
