Veterinary clinics built by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAP) are sitting unused, according to Member of Parliament (MP) Aurelio Freitas Ribeiro.

MP Aurelio Freitas Ribeiro.

MP Ribeiro said the clinics, which were built with money from the 2013 state budget, had been overtaken by goats and grass.

The clinics, which are in Baucau, Viqueque and Lospalos districts, sat abandoned as the government did not pay them sufficient attention after construction was complete, he said.

“We just want to execute the money but when the money is finished, there is no result,” he said.

Minister Mariano Asanami Sabino acknowledged that the clinics in those districts had been abandoned but said clinics in several other districts were functioning well.

“We think many clinics have been utilized,” Minister Sabino said.

He said the clinics which had been abandoned were so because there was no co-ordination link between the national program and the district level.

Some clinics were built as part of the District Development Program (PDD) but after completion it was decided they were not strategically placed for use, he said.

He said strong existing links between MAP and PDD would mean the situation would improve.
