Member of Parliament (MP) Cesar Valente de Jesus has questioned why children are washing cars in Kaikoli when they should be in school.
MP Valente said the children were washing the cars right next to the Ministry of Social Solidarity but no one seemed to care.
“I saw many children gather to wash cars at school time; are they not students?” MP Valente asked in National Parliament.
Valente cited the laws of Article Six which says one of the objects of the state is to build a society built on social justice.
He said children of the nation’s leaders weresent to top-level schools while children from poor families were abandoned.
Meanwhile Minister of Social Solidarity, Isabel Gutteres, said she felt sad as the children were washing cars on the street instead of going to school.
“We are cooperating with NGOs to pay attention to children who wash cars on the street,” Minister Guterres said.
She said every year the government allocated money to civil society organizations to help prevent children from working on the streets.
