Secretary of State for Security (SES) has provided 26 Honda motorbikes to the Communitarian Police in order to facilitate their work.
National Department of Communitarian Police (DPKN) Deputy Chief Helena das Dores Alves said the motorbikes were given by the government to the command in January after being purchased with the 2013 budget.
“Currently those motorbikes are at the national command; soon we will distribute them to the district commands,” Deputy das Dores Alves said in Kaikoli, Dili.
She said communitarian police were forced to conduct their work without transport, relying on walking.
“Now it can help the communitarian police work at the bases,” she said.
She said she did not know how many motorbikes each command would receive.
Member of Commission F (security, defense, foreign affair) Member of Parliament Anna Ribeiro said the motorbikes would help facilitate the work at the bases.
“I hope that they can work more effectively,” she said.
But she said the government needed to ensure the motorbikes were properly maintained to guarantee they would be useful in the long term.
