National Parliament Member (MP) Antonio Serpa Ximenes has urged the Ministry of Social Solidarity (MSS) to buy more funeral cars as the current amount of vehicles is insufficient.
MP Serpa said more funeral cars would make it easier to transport bodies to the districts to be buried.
The MP said purchasing new hearses was important to assist those could not afford to move their deceased family members.
The MP said money was allocated in the 2012 state budget to purchase vehicles but it was insufficient.
More money will be allocated this year.
MP Manuel Gaspar says many funeral cars were damaged through a lack of maintenance.
“Every year the state allocates money to buy different facilities but there’s no maintenance for those facilities,” MP Gaspar said.
Minister for Social Solidarity (MSS), Isabel Amaral Guterres says the MSS bought six funeral cars last year and will buy four more this year.
US$130 million was allocated to purchase vehicles as well as run scholarship programs, and support veterans and national disaster victims, MP Guterres said.
“The four funeral cars will be for remote areas that do not have cars,” she said.
