Houses behind the Falintil-Defense Force of Timor-Leste (F-FDTL) headquarters in Baucau belong to the military, and are not Millennium Goal (MDG) homes, according to Agency of National Development director Avelino Marcal.
He said those houses were needed urgently for F-FDTL members.
The director said materials were needed to build houses and supply them with clean water. A school should also be built, he said. ”
He said houses for 200 F-FDTL members were ready, but lacked clean water.
“Water has been pumped but communities have cut the pipe along the way, that’s why the housing is insufficient,” he said.
Monitoring by Commission D in Manufahi District has shown there are 123 MDG houses in the Bee Metan sub-village, Betano, which are inhabited by community members.
However the condition of the housing is poor, with the structures leaking in the rainy season.
“The house foundation is too short, so they are leaky in rainy season, while in dry season it is too hot,” Member of Parliament Ana Belo said.
Therefore she called on the relevant ministry to conduct a viability study before constructing more houses to assure their quality.
MP Inacio Moreira said MDG house were a big problem, and called for the development of a proper system to solve the issue.
“Currently those houses are rented by the people who have money,” he said.
