In September 2013 there were a total number of 22 traffic accidents and from this number two people died.
National Traffic Commander, Chief Inspector Antonio L.C. Soares said of the 22 cases, 15 resulted in minor injuries, two people died and 5 people were seriously injurred.
“From those incidents the process is now with the courts, 13 cases are still in the process and 7 cases were solved through kinship,” Commandant Soares said in Kaikoli, Dili.
Regarding the accidents that caused the fatalities, he said they happened in Bobonaro district and Dili district.
“In Dili, one person died because the vehicle was out of control and in Bobonaro because the conditions of the car were poor.”
He added in the previous month, when traffic lights hadn’t been set up, the total number of accidents was big but after setting up the new lights the number was decreasing.
Meanwhile Member of Parliament Inacio Moreira said traffic accidents always happened in every country but the volume of accidents was different.
“But I’m seeing the start of regulation because the traffic lights have started working. The government always needs to take action so if they’re broken they can fix them quickly,” MP Moreira urged.
He also appealed for drivers not to drink and drive because it could threaten their own lives and the lives of others.
