The National Traffic Police will auction 10 motorbikes that were seized between January and October 2013 as the owners didn’t come to collect them after they were seized.
The Commander of the National Traffic Police, Chief Inspector Antonio L.C. Soares said artlce 160 of the Inter-Ministerial Law states that when police seize motorbikes or cars, they should only be left for three months at the police station.
“If it’s more than three months, the vehicles will be auctioned,” he said.
He said the motorbikes were seized as the drivers did not have registration documents or a driver’s license.
Before the auction, he affirmed police would publish the information so anybody could buy them if they were interested.
“We will confirm with the Public Prosecutor so they can look into the issue, especially with news programs,” said Soares.
According to him the money from the auction will go back into state coffers.
Meanwhile MP Mateus de Jesus agrees with the initiative as it was regulated under the law.
“They do this based on the law and I think if the owners don’t come to take their vehicles, police will auction them,” the MP said.
According to him, this could encourage people to obey the existing traffic laws, as people often fool around.
On the other hand, driver Manuel Freitas said this was good but the time period could be extended to four months as some people are still dealing with their documents.
