The National Police of Timor-Leste will give drum band training to students in 12 districts, so the students can learn how to play in a drum band.

MP David Dias Ximenes says the drum band training delivered by the PNTL to students is a positive step.

Chief Sergeant and Trainer Helder F. Guerra said the program was through the Secretary of State for Youth and Sport and in 2010 they managed to handover band equipment to 12 of the districts, but not Dili district.

“They send us a letter to the PNTL command to ask for the support of PNTL members in giving training, therefore we, and I myself will give support to this activity until it’s a success,” Chief Sergeant Guerra said in Kaikoli, Dili.

He said they already managed give training to students and young people in Viqueque, Oe-cusse, Aileu and Manufahi districts.

“During the one week training in Manufahi district there were 45 students who participated and they were very proud because they didn’t know a lot before,” said Sergeant Guerra.

He said the training materials taught students about tenor drums, the master stick and so forth, and after giving the training it was a real success.

“Like nowadays they are in the preparation phase for a music event held by the Secretary of State for Youth and Sport involving 12 district bands,” Sergeant Guerra said.

On the other hand, Member of Parliament David Diaz said this was a positive step, as the training could create good relations between the police and students in the field.

“It’s good so they can articulate themselves with youths, it’s a good situation,” MP Diaz said.

He also said students needed knowledge in this area, because through these activities they could build their capacity for the future.
