The Dili Diocese Bishop Dom Alberto Ricardo da Silva says Timor-Leste gained independence because the people complied with their duties.
Dom da Silva made the comments during mass at Bemeta Church in Betano, Manufahi district on August 19.
“We develop and use the capacity that God gave us to continue to gather modern sciences and technology into this historic camp,” said Bishop Ricardo in Betano.
He called on all people to be brave and diligent in the struggle for their lives, dignity, liberty and nation.
“We celebrate our independence, becoming a free nation and a free people, because people used their consciences and complied with their duties,” he said.
At the intention mass in Betano, Bishop Ricardo asked for grace and a blessing to eradicate poverty and illiteracy in Timor-Leste so it could become prosperous in Asia.
Meanwhile the Secretary of State for Former Combatants of National Liberation, Julio Sarmento da Costa (alias Meta Malik), thanked the Bishop for holding mass for the demobilization ceremony in Betano.
“We thank the parish priests and nuns that helped us so far, preparing and organizing everything so that now we can celebrate mass,” he said.
The Secretary of State also thanked the President of the Republic Taur Matan Ruak, the President of National Parliament Vicente Guteres, the General Commander of the Falintil Defence Force Timor-Leste, Major General Lere Anan Timur as well as those taking part in the demobilisation ceremony.
“For all Christians in Manufahi, especially Betano, who helped us over the last few weeks and gave us a place to organize this work,” he said.
At the same place Betano resident Maria da Cruz said the celebration mass was important to thank heroes who lost their lives for independence.
“We should also thank our state for acknowledging our veterans who are still alive,” said da Cruz.
She said to build the nation, many people suffered and lost their lives.
“That’s why in this mass we pray for our friends who lost their lives during the war, and we should also not forget to thank our friends who are still alive,” she said.
