A man has been sentenced seven years in prison for trafficking a woman for sexual exploitation.

According to the prosecution facts read by the presiding judge, in 2014 the accused and the 20-year-old victim went to Macau Hotel in Dili to meet a client. After they arrived the accused began negotiating with the client while the victim waited in the car. The police then arrived and arrested all three of them.
The court heard the accused had sold the victim on three separate occasions.
The victim had previously been involved in prostitution and the accused was aware of this and therefore took advantage of her for his own profit.
The accused is a 34-year-old married father-of-two, who lives in Becora and works as a taxi driver.
When asked by the presiding judge to respond to the accusations, the accused declined and said he agreed with the facts as outlined.
The prosecution asked the court to impose a heavy sentence as it was a serious crime.
Meanwhile, the public defender called on the court to impose a suitable sentence, saying the accused regretted what he had done.
Before imposing a seven-year sentence, the presiding judge described the actions of the accused as immoral and said he had brought shame on the state.
“It is not good action hope that he will sorry for what he has done and will not repeat such action,”he said.
