A woman has appeared in Dili municipality court (DMC) after she punched her husband in a public place over suspicions he was having an affair with another woman.
According to the facts presented to the court, the accused (AR) confronted the victim (LG) while he was selling goods at the market.
During the confrontation she questioned why her husband hadn’t been home for a week and accused him of having an affair in front of onlookers.
The court was told the victim did not respond to his wife’s allegations even though she continued to insult him and punch him until he fell to the ground.
The accused immediately returned home after the incident, which was later reported to police by witnesses at the market.
When asked by the Judge President for her response the accused said she agreed with the facts as outlined.
The victim told the court that the couple had since separated, but that as the mother of his child, he didn’t harbor any animosity towards his wife.
“Because of her actions, I have decided to live separately and I am responsible for my child who lives with her and I forgive her,” he said.
The victim denied he was having an affair and said that he had been working to support his wife and child.
“I worked for them, but she was always thinking that I was having an affair and she threw a stone at me in the public place,” he said.
After hearing the facts of the case, the judge president handed down a one-year suspended sentence, telling the accused not to commit such an offence again otherwise she could face prison.
