The Gender Focal Point at the National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL) Superintendent Umbelina Soares said the institution’s women personnel need leadership training to they can take on leadership roles.

“Our knowledge about leadership is limited so we need capacity building,” said Superintendent Soares.
The Gender Focal Point said the number of policewomen who have knowledge of leadership is still low and that most women have not received leadership training.
She added the issue has been raised with the PNTL Command and the women are waiting for the training to be delivered.
Member of the Parliamentary Women’s Group MP Josefa Alvares Soares said PNTL policewomen need capacity building in all areas but in particular in leadership.
“They need to understand how to be more assertive as women and how they can become leaders. It is also important they know how to build good networks and establish good cooperation with other members,” added the MP.
