Some fifty Timorese youth gave blood voluntarily to help save patients, in particular women patients in need of blood transfusions in the hospitals.

Youth Joni Alves, said 50 Youth give blood donations to save women in hospitals

Youth Joni Alves said this act of solidarity goes to show how a drop of blood can help save someone’s life in particular the life of women patients.

“We the youth are really motivated by this act of solidarity to donate blood to help people in the hospitals who need the blood because it cannot just be bought and sold,”  said youth Alves after donating his blood in a recent blood donation drive help in Lecidere, Dili, to make World Youth Day around the theme of “Save Lives and Contribute with your Blood.”

The Chief of the National Blood Bank (BNS) of the National Hospital Guido Valadares Arsenio Jose Afonso thanked the youth for giving blood voluntarily for the hospital so that i can be used to save other people’s life.

“We have very limited stocks, down to 35 [bags] which isn’t enough to attend patients’ needs particularly women who experience haemorrhaging after delivery,” said Chief Afonso.

He added that there is only one blood bank for the whole Timor-Leste that has to supply blood to public health facilities as well as private ones.

A Representative of the Secretariat of State for Youth and Sports Florindo Napoleao said the act of voluntarily donating blood serves as a motivator for the youth to consider how they can help others.

“Through blood donations, we can help patients in hospitals who need blood and this a contribution of solidarity the youth can make towards our nation and other people,” said Napoleao.
