The Dili District Court has sentenced a man who brutally assaulted his wife because dinner was not to his liking.
The victim told the Dili District Court she did not have enough money to buy vegetables and served her husband rice for dinner.
She said her husband returned to the house from the garden for dinner at about 7.30pm and was enraged to see there were no vegetables with the rice.
The victim testified she told her husband he could eat the rice with chili, a remark which offended him.
He went to the kitchen, returning with a piece of wood which he used to hit her on the back three times and once in the head.
The woman immediately went to the hospital for treatment.
The accused chose not to speak in his defence.
The man’s lawyer Fernando Lopes said the accused regretted his actions and promised the court such an incident would not occur again.
The man was handed an administrative sentence.
