The International Republic Institute (IRI) has facilitated Fretilin and National Congress of Timor Reconstruction (CNRT) members of Parliament to hear concerns of Suai residents.
The residents said they face difficulties such as a lack of clean water, poor roads connecting Aileu and Suai, incomplete bridges and poor school facilities.
Fretilin MP Aniceto Guterres Lopes said the listening program allowed MPs to hear the complaints of village residents directly so they could then bring them back to Parliament.
“These concerns will be passed on to the government,” MP Lopes said.
Suai administration representative Jacinto dos Santos praised the program and said it would bring positive results to Suai residents.
Senior program officer Carlito Nunes said the public meeting aimed to strengthen personal contact between parliament members and rural residents.
These rural residents had no other way to raise their concerns to Parliament.
“MPs want to hear and find out the residents’ complaints to find the solution to those complaints,” Nunes said.
