Public Works Minister Gastão Souza said the government will not pay companies which run projects without contracts.

Minister of Public Works Gastao de Sousa says the government will not pay for works undertaken by companies without contracts.

The Minister raised as some companies have run emergency projects in Cova Lima, Lospalos and Viqueque and the Watu-lari and Wati-carbau sub-districts without contracts.

“To be honest with you that there is no money to pay them and we have appealed to the companies to stop the works,” Minister Souza said in Dili.

He said the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) team would go to sites to check and prevent emergency or non-emergency projects being run by companies without contracts.

“Not all these projects are emergency projects,” Minister Souza said.

Member of Commission E (for infrastructure, transport and communication affairs) MP Inacio Moreira agreed with Souza.

“The right system is that running any projects requires a contract,” Moreira said.

Companies have been running emergency projects in five districts, implemented by order of the Secretary of State for Public Works.

Moreira asked the government tocollaborate with the companies.

“Some projects are 100 per cent done,” he said.
