Monitoring by National Parliament’s Commission F (education, health, culture, veterans’ affairs and gender equality) has revealed that schools all across the country are not in adequate condition to facilitate learning.
Commission member Leonel Marcal said the monitoring project listened to input from people involved directly with the schools, who are continually questioning the condition of the schools.
During a debate in Parliament about the 2014 State General Budget, Member of Parliament (MP) Marcal asked what progress had been made on Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao’s pledge to get all schools in Timor-Leste to a minimum standard by the end of the year.
The Prime Minister promised no student would have to sit on the floor in class by 2015.
Education Minister Bendito Freitas said $25 million had been allocated in the federal budget to rehabilitate schools across the country.
Minister Freitas said 341 schools would be rehabilitated.
He said discussions were being held with the National Development Agency to decide how best to implement the policy.
