National Community Police Department(POLKOM) has held a program which saw officers visit residents’ houses in Kaikoli, Dili.

POLKOM department chief Deputy Helena das Dores Alves said POLKOM shares information with the community with the aim of preventing conflicts.

POLKOM Department Chief, Deputy Helena Das Dores Alves says the objective of the program was to raise awareness on how to prevent and avoid conflicts and to share the information with communities so members are not so easily influenced by rumors that have the potential to provoke confrontations.

“There are currently many illegal groups so it’s necessary to tell the communities not to listen toany rumors that can influence them to get involved in the groups,” she said
She said the program was run by the departmental team of National Community Police in collaboration with the Dili District Community Police team.

She said the program has been carried out in all 13 districts with responsibility to implement the program falling to each district commander.

“In Dili it has started from Kaikoli and next will be another village,” she said.

MP Inacio Moreira said she was pleased with the program and recognized the efforts of the National Parliament and the Ministry of Defense and Security.

“We must remind the community not to get involved in any rumors and acts that might destroy this nation,” MP Moreira said.

The MP Said rumors were present and some acts created instability.

He said he hoped this program could remind people that it is not right to be involved in acts which may result in harm.

Kaikoli resident Manuel Ximenes said the program was a good initiative but needed to involve youths and be well organized in future.
