National Traffic Police (POLTRANS) has issued fines to the drivers of 117 taxis for traffic violations in March.
National Traffic Commander Chief Inspector Antonio L.C. Soares said it was a two-day operation that ran March 6 and 7.
The first day saw 75 taxis nabbed and 42 the next.
Violations included driving without licenses or with expired documents, taxis without lights and drivers operating without the correct uniform.
Taxis were also seized for not being marked with “TAXI” and for blackened windscreens.
He Chief Inspector Soares said motorists who broke the rules were given sanctions by the Traffic Police and had to pay fines at the National Directorate of Transport.
The fine for driving without carrying a license was $24, while not marking the car with the word “TAXI” was $6 and drivers out of uniform were left $30 out of pocket.
Member of Commission B (Security, Defense and Foreign Affair) Member of Parliament (MP) Anna Ribeiro supported the initiative as it was the duty of POLTRANS to implement laws.
MP Ribeiro said some drivers had been fined two or three times.
She appealed to the taxi drivers to obey the rules which she said would then reduce the rates of traffic incidents.
