The Secretary of State for the Promotion of Equality (SEPI) Idelta Maria Rodrigues says SEPI will cooperate with UN Women to provide capacity building training for the team to present the second Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) report in Geneva.
She said the team that will represent Timor-Leste will be challenged by experts with questions.
She asked each ministry to select one person knowledgeable about gender issues to serve on the team.
“While we are waiting for the agenda from the CEDAW committee, we are preparing them because they will face the experts,” Rodrigues said.
She added the training was usually given by world experts to prepare each state’s team to respond to the questions the experts will ask which will be related to the report presented by the state.
She said SEPI will allocate funds and get support from UN Women to see the team’s preparation as it is not easy to respond to experts’ questions.
Ministry of Education Gender Focal Point Afonso Soares said the ministry needed to have a good understanding of the report presentation.
“We need to hold training to have a good preparation and a good understanding of the regulations to respond appropriately,” Soares said.
Human Rights Ombudsman (PDHJ) Deputy Silveiro Baptista Pinto said preparation was important because the experiences remind us of the regulations.
