National Parliament member (MP) Eldadio Faculto has criticized drivers who leave vehicles parked improperly, causing traffic problems within Dili.
MP Faculto said some cars and motorbikes were left parked on zebra crossing, on footpaths and blocking the way into suburbs.
“Some sell their cars and motorbikes by parking them just anywhere,” MP Faculto said at National Parliament.
He asked the Traffic Police to look into this issue and sanction drivers who park their cars and motorbikes improperly.
In response to this concern, Traffic Police Commander Inspector Chief Antonio L. C. Soares said he recognized this issue should be overcome.
“We don’t have the by-laws yet so far,” Chief Soares said by phone.
He said Traffic Police were powerless to do anything about the problem as they did not have proper authorization.
However he said the police did have the power to seize vehicles parked across zebra crossings and issue the drivers with fines of between $12 and $15, which must be paid to the National Directorate for Transport (DNTT).
Resident Ciquito Oliveira said some drivers parked their vehicles across zebra crossings because they did not understand what the crossings were for.
“It’s the traffic police’s job to tell them about it,” he said.
