Member of National Parliament Adriano João has proposed the Ministry of State Administration (MAE) introduce rigorous laws to regulate the disposal of rubbish.

MP João said the proposed laws should give the MAE the power to sanction those who dispose of their rubbish incorrectly. The Democratic Party (PD) MP said Dili is the doorway to the nation, with many events held in the city every year.

He said was still full of rubbish as communities were unaware of the need to live in a healthy environment.

MP Ana Belo said it was past time to create a ministerial diploma to apply sanctions to those who discard rubbish arbitrarily.

“The Heads of villages can organize populations in the villages for a public clean up,” MP Belo said.

She called on the Head of villages and sub-villages to tell their communities not to discard rubbish arbitrarily.

“Don’t just wait for the Prime Minister and ministers to go down and clean up our homes,” she said.

Minister of State Administration, Jorge da Conceição Teme, acknowledged the government had not enacted laws to regulate the hours in which people may dispose of rubbish.

“We discard rubbish 24 hours but we remove it for only one day, so we are considering a law to regulate when people may cast off rubbish that can also apply sanctions to those who discard rubbish arbitrarily,” Minister Teme said.

Teme added that sometimes, community members discarded rubbish correctly in rubbish bins but animals would draw out the rubbish.
