The National Directorate for Controlling Water Quality (DNKKB) has supplied a map of Timor-Leste’s hydrogeology to the State Secretary for Water and Sanitation so the department can identify underground water resources.

DNKKB director Osorio Gregorio de Araujo said the hydrogeology map charted the characteristics of the underground water table.

He said DNKKB worked with donors from nations such as Australia and Norway on the water resource management project.

State Secretary for Electricity (SEE) and State Secretary for Water and Sanitation representative Januario da Costa Pereira said the map was very important to communities.

“Our country really needs the hydrogeology map as with the map we can know information about the water when we extract it,” said SE Pereira.

Council Minister of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Vin Ashcroft said Australia and Timor-Leste were similar in that both countries had underground water resources.

He said Timor could benefit from the similarities.

“It’s believed that the map will benefit Timor since Australia has a similar mapping system,” Council Minister Ashcroft said.
