Member of the National Parliament (MP) Eladio Faculto has raised concerns about the implementation of the new secondary school curriculum as there has not been adequate socialization.
“They have made changes to the curriculum without socialization,” the MP said at National Parliament.
He called on the Ministry of Education (ME) to distribute information about the new curriculum to the schools so the students can read them.
MP Cesar Valente de Jesus said texts covering the history of the resistance should be taught in schools so students had a better knowledge of their nation’s history.
“As an example, when I asked my kid what is the name of the Education Minister he didn’t know,” MP de Jesus said.
He said this illustrated students’ lack of knowledge about Timor-Leste’s history and affairs.
Education Minister Bendito Freitas said the ministry will hold a review to reshape the curriculum to include more material about Timor-Leste’s history.
“A review of the curriculum, especially in regards to history, needs to be done because of its national value,” he said.
“It is important to include the new generation into the national consciousness. Our children can know the history of Timor-Leste,” he said.
