Member of the National Parliament, MP Josefa Pereira Soares, said some of the houses built by the government for the vulnerable as part of its Millennium Development Goals (MDG) plan have been abandoned because of poor conditions.
She asked company BTK to be held accountable and to follow the terms of their contract because this was an expensive project.
“Most the MDG houses built in the districts are of poor quality. Roofs leak, they don’t have piped water or electricity or toilets,” said MP Soares at the National Parliament.
The MP also questioned why the government keeps giving BTK company contracts when it has such a poor track record in implementing projects.
“Even if BTK does not deliver, BTK still gets it. Perhaps from behind, some advantages,” said the added.
She hopes in 2014 the government will better monitor and study companies implementing projects given it is spending so much money on projects that should be beneficial to the vulnerable.
Similar concerns were raised by MP Albina Marçal Freitas who said the government handed over keys to the houses to the vulnerable but they ended up abandoning the houses because they were of poor condition.
“Some did stay but nor permanently because there wasn’t water, electricity and toilets,” said MP Freitas.
In response to the claims of the Members of Parliament, the Minister of Social Solidarity (MSS), Isabel Amaral Guterres, said she is not aware of the issue and as far as she knows keys to the MDG houses were given to those identified by the Heads of Village.
“I cannot give more comments because as far as I know all the MDG houses are occupied,” said Minster Guterres.
