Rehabilitation works on the Taroman Bridge in Suai District started in 2010but works have since stopped.
Member of Parliament MP Manuel Castro said large sums of money were allocated for the rehabilitation work but so far the bridge remains incomplete.
“The work has come to a halt and cement bought to pour into the site has since April 2013 all been used,” said MP at the National Parliament.
The MP urges the government to quickly rectify the situation with the company contracted to undertake the work.
The Secretary of State for Public Work (SEOP), Luis Vas Rodrigues, said work on the bridge has halted because the company is still waiting for materials to arrive.
“We are waiting on more iron so we can complete the middle section,” SE Rodrigues said.
He added the company awarded the contract has already been warned by the Ministry of Public Works and has given assurances the bridge will be completed in 2014.
“We will give them ample time to complete it. We gave the company until March 2014 to complete the work,” SE Rodrigues said.
The SE said also the rehabilitation work on the Taroman Bridge will cost in total in excess of US$3 Million but the payment to the company has been deferred until it delivers the project.
“We will pay but the company has many projects and we need to see they can manage the project budget adequately,” said SE Rodrigues.
