The Judicial System Monitoring Program (JSMP) NGO recommends all District Courts to install closed circuit television CCTLV in all district courts.
JSMP Executive Director, Luis de Oliveira Sampaio, said the CCTV network will increase security in the district as well as all other courts.
“None of our courts have CCTV system installed to ensure security at the courts and also at the Ministry of Public Prosecutions,” said JSMP Director Sampaio from his office in Colmera, Dili.
He added CCTV in the courts is important the security integrity of these institutions.
“If a thief enters or if there is a fight in the courts the CCTV cameras will be able to capture these moment so we know what happened,” he said.
Meanwhile Dili District Court Administrator, Judge Duarte Tilman, agreed with the recommendation and said CCTV cameras as needed in the courts and other judicial sites.
“Therefore during our presentation for the State Budget 2014 we can ask about this,” said Judge Tilman.
He added currently the Dili District Court only has three permanent police officers stationed at the court.
“We really need CCTV so we can monitor numbers of visitors and also monitor if someone brings in a weapon to cause problems. Unless we are able to monitor what happens outside these can be brought into the court,” said also Judge Tilman.
