The Military Academy in Aileu Municipality was established to provide training to prepare young people to implement more modern services within the Falintil-Timor-Leste Defence Force (F-FDTL) in the future.
Director of the Military Academy, Frigate Captain Duarte Borges Loe, said that the curriculum to be implemented at the Military Academy will not focus just on traditional military training for young people.
“The Military Academy curriculum will only provide modern training,” he said.
He said that the modern training includes learning how to use technology for operational planning, learning about regional and global security and defence, and learning about diplomacy to cooperate with other countries.
“The training that young people receive at the Military Academy will prepare them to lead a more modern F-FDTL in the future,” Military Academy Director Frigate Captain Loe said at the Archives and Museum of the Resistance in Dili.
He said that in addition to military training, the Military Academy will also provide civic and practical training, and the curriculum will also be adapted from other countries that already have military academies.
Meanwhile, President of the Military Academy New Cadet Recruitment Commission, Nuno Manuel Corvelo de Andrade Sarmento, said that a total of 66 new cadets have passed the tests in preparation to enter the Military Academy for its first academic year.
“The 66 cadets will undergo an aptitude test at the barracks for ten (10) days. Those who can endure it will remain, while those who cannot can return home, but we believe that all 66 can endure it and remain to continue training for the first academic year,” he said.
He said that the commission has completed all the tests and will hand over the cadets to the Military Academy soon.
On the other hand, Director of the Non-Governmental Organisation Belun, Luis Ximenes, said that the Military Academy must also consider the country’s needs to respond to security issues.
“Internal and external security issues, as well as building bilateral relations and research, are important because the military today is very modern,” he said.
In addition, he said that Timor-Leste now deserves to establish a Military Academy to prepare future F-FDTL leadership through a modern system.
