Soon after being assembled and installed the new drainage system was again dismantled because drainage channels were not adequately installed.

Member of Parliament (MP) Inacio Moreira, Commission E (Infrastructure, Transport and Communication), said members of his commission conducted an inspection of the site and found some of the drainage channels sat higher than the street.

“We saw the drainage channels and the job was not done property. They used to different types of materials of different quality. Some were of good quality and some were not so the connections fell short. We asked the company to disassemble the channels and start over,” said MP Moreira.

He said the way the new drainage channels were installed; the water will still not run, defeating the purpose of installing new drainage-channels.

Meanwhile MP Pedro dos Martires da Costa, the President of Commission E, said the work done needs to suit the purpose for which the new drainage channels were built and that is to allow water to run to the sea and not cause floods in the middle of the street.

“We saw that drainage channels were different, this will cause problems in future,” said MP da Costa.

Meanwhile the National Director of Basic Sanitation Services (DNSB) at the State Secretariat of Water and Sanitation (SEAS), João Nazaret da Piedade Braz, said he was aware of the situation.

“But we dismantled the drainage-channels not because of quality but because some sections were installed higher than the street,” he said.

The project is being implemented by Tifoho Company and will be completed in December 2013.

“We gave the company until 30 December to complete the work as per the deadline,” said Director Braz.

The project cost $650,000 thousand with moneys from the infrastructure fund.
