The Deputy President of the Anti Corruption Commission (KAK), Commissioner Manuel Bucar, said the role of the media is very important for the work of the commission and the media informs KAK of what is going wrong in society.
“You lead the way for KAK. Without you it would be very hard for KAK,” said Commissioner Bucar, in Dili.
He added the role of the media is very important for KAK and the way it operates because the commission only employs sixty workers.
“Media like television and radio are very important so KAK becomes aware of any wrongdoing. KAK can then use the news for verification,” said the commissioner.
In 2012 and 2013 KAK investigated some 200 cases of corruption.
Most of the cases relate to abuses of power and the use of state assets for private interest including also the passive act of receiving illegal goods.
“If we wish our community to enjoy a better life, the money from the State Annual budget needs to go to the people.”
Meanwhile Human Rights Activist, José Luis Oliveira, said it is up to state actors such as KAK to ensure people get a better life and enjoy tranquility.
As a human rights activist he said everyone must have equal rights.
