The threat of the mud damage at the Betano Power Plant has recently been resolved as the protective fence was fixed following problems a few months ago.

“The specialists from outside held a test, so everything is progressing there,” said the General Director for Electricity Virgilio Guteres in Kaikoli, Dili.

Apart from this, Member of Commission E (for infrastructure, transport and communication) MP Manuel de Castro Pereira said there was mud there because they dug around the power plant and water flooded in.

“But about its construction, I can say that we do not doubt the construction is strong,” MP Castro said.

He suspected there was an underground spring close to the Betano Power Plant.

“Recently we went to do the inauguration and there was not a lot of water, as the water was far from the fence.”

On the other hand, President of Parliamentary Commission E, MP Pedro da Costa said the mud would not have an impact on the power plant because previously they held a geologic and tectonic study in the area.

“The mud case happened as there is source water on the mountain,” MP da Costa said.

He said there was no pipe to take water to the sea, so water went down to the referred power plant.

“They have thought of putting a big drain to connect water to the sea,” he said.
