There are currently 99,000 homes around the country that have access to electricity through the electricity plants at Hera and Betano.
General Director at the Secretariat of State for Electricity, Virgilio Guteres, said from 2009 until now, 50% of the homes had gained access to electricity.
“Now we install 250 megawattsand there is sufficient capacity to supply energy to the public,” said the General Director in Betano.
He said the electricity centres could supply the public and attract investors to Timor-Leste.
Meanwhile, Manufahi District Administrator Filomeno Tilman said everyone would benefit from the Betano Electricity Centre, especially the Manufahi community.
“That’s why we should all contribute to securing the electricity centre,” he said.
The District Administrator explained the community would benefit from the electricity centre, as they could run businesses to sustain their families.
At same place, Betano resident Maria da Costa said she was proud as she already had access to electricity.
She said they did not need to spend money to buy candles and kerosene because they had light in their home.
“We previously only lit a lamp when our children studied at night, but now we are happy as we have electricity in our home,” said da Costa.
