The National Traffic Police will raise awareness about how to use zebra crossings on television, so the community can learn about the function of these lines.
National Traffic Police Commander, Chief inspector Antonio L.C Soares said they had distributed information about zebra crossings through pamphlets and tried to raise awareness on the street, but people still didn’t follow the rules.
“So we’ve changed the system and we will put ads on television,” said Commander Soares in Kaikoli, Dili.
He said the advertising involved a box with advice like people should not drink and drive, motorcyclists must wear a helmet, there should be respect for pedestrians walking on zebra crossings and people should not answer the phone while driving.
“We hope through this method we can open our minds and understand the function of zebra crossings,” said Commander Soares.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament Mateus de Jesus said it was a good initiative.
“Maybe they’ve already tried all methods but feel there haven’t been good results, so they will try this way again, I support this,” he said.
On the other hand, Joao Fernandes said a lot of people in the community didn’t understand, while some understood but chose not to follow the rules.
