To prevent human trafficking cases within the nation, the Alola Foundation has raised awareness about the issue of human trafficking with youths, as the issue is considered a risk in Timor-Leste.

The Alola Foundation shared information about human trafficking and gender issues with young people in Dili.

Alola Foundation Advocacy Program Manager Maria Gorumali Barreto said they had an important obligation to increase young people’s knowledge about human trafficking and the prevention of human trafficking.

She said the training was very important for young people, especially girls, because young girls often become victims of human trafficking.

“We talk about human trafficking because often young girls become victims,so it’s an important objective for the Alola Foundation to share this information,” said the Program Manager in Mascarenhas, Dili.

She said human trafficking existed in Timor-Leste but it was hard to detect because communities were not open about it.

At the same place, training participant Bernadete Caetano said it was important to understand about human trafficking.

“I believe this is not just something for me to know and apply in my life, but as a good young person it’s something I will share and apply in my society,” said Caetano.

Meanwhile Ilario de Araujo Sarmento said the training was very good and gave the opportunity for them to have discussions and ask when they did not understand the context.

He asked the organization to continue delivering the training to increase young people’s knowledge of specific areas like this.
