Public servants have been warned that under the law they are banned from taking part in political campaign activities during working hours.

President of the Public Service Commission (KFP) Commissioner Faustino Cardoso said that public servants had an obligation to work eight hours per day and a total of 40 hours per week.
He therefore called on all public servants to fulfill their obligations and not take part in political activities during working hours.
He also warned that breaking the regulations would have a negative impact on their career and affect their chances of promotion in the future.
He said public servants had a right to choose their preferred political candidate, but must comply with election regulations.
“On voting day they can choose according to their conscience, without obligation from anyone,” he said.
He said public servants had been banned from participating in political activities because they were an example in the context of the state.
National MP Francisco da Costa said the law clearly stated that public servants were not permitted to use working hours for political activities.
He said those public servants that violated the law deserved to be sanctioned.
“They have a right to participate in the election, but if it is during working hours then they should be at work,” he said.
He also called on the KFP president to control public servants in order to prevent the situation occurring.
