The National Election Commission (CNE) has begun raising awareness among political parties about the general election system.

CNE has begun raising awareness among political parties about the general election system.

CNE President Alcino Barris said the commission was providing information about the election process in Timor and how parties can register to take part as many were unaware about the regulations.

In order to comply, each party must have 20,000 registered supporters, hold a national congress to select a new party leader and meet all requirements six months prior to the election being held.

Meanwhile, Trabalhista party President Angela Freitas said it was important for all political parties to have a good understanding of the election system.

“It is very important so we know and follow [the process] according to the system and regulations,” she said.

General Secretary of the Democratic Party (PD) Rui Menezes also agreed that political parties should have a good understanding of the regulations.

“How many parties already registered have fulfilled the conditions of the law to contest the election?” he asked.

Under the law, parties wishing to contest the general election must register with the Public Ministry and then receive validation in the Court of Appeal.
