A man has appeared in court after assaulting a mentally ill woman after she attempted to destroy his television set.

According to the facts read to the court, the accused (TF) was at home watching TV about 4pm on March 15, 2015 when the victim (TM) suddenly entered the house and tried to damage the TV.

The accused then ran after the woman, hitting and pulling her hair until she fell to the ground.

When asked by the President Judge to provide a further statement, the accused said he agreed with the facts as outlined to the court.

“I was shocked and angry, but I feel sorry for what I have done,” he told the court.

The accused said he took full responsibility for his actions and had since apologized to the victim’s family.

The victim’s brother (MJ), who was called as a witness in the case, said the accused was genuinely sorry for the incident and had also taken his sister for treatment at the National Hospital of Guido Valadares (NHGV).

“He was sorry for what he did and has also provided moral support to my sister,” he said.

He also called for the accused to have more understanding of the victim’s situation, which he said was due to mental illness.

After hearing the facts of the case, the President Judge handed down a suspended sentence and warned the accused that he would face imprisonment if he repeated his actions again.
