The World Health Organization (WHO) has provided the Health Ministry with personal protection equipment to protect health workers in the event of suspected Ebola cases.

WHO has provided personal protective equipment to the Health Ministry in the event of an Ebola outbreak.

WHO representative Dr Jorge Mario Luna said while Timor-Leste was at low risk of an Ebola outbreak, preparation was needed.

About 100 protective suits were provided to the Health Ministry along with training on how to use the equipment.

Dr Luna said WHO sent five Timorese medics to an Ebola management training course in Indonesia.

Any suspected Ebola samples will be sent to India for analysis, he said.

National Hospital of Guido Valadares (HNGV) clinic director Joao Pedro said the hospital was prepared to deal with Ebola cases.

“Our staff are being trained but we need the facilities in order to deal with this disease,” he said.

Ministry of Health Disease Control director Ines Theodosia Almeida said there was no need for panic as the Ministry of Health was doing its best to prepare for the possibility of an outbreak.

Equipment had been provided to hospitals in border regions, he said.
