A new performance appraisal system will be implemented by the National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL) to evaluate the work done by individual police officers.

PNTL Deputy Commander Commissioner Afonso de Jesus said officers will have their everyday conduct assessed.
He said the appraisal system was created following meetings between the General Commander and district commanders in August and October.
“The outcomes of the discussions will be presented to the general commander where it will be approved by the General Commander. After that we will begin to evaluate each member,” he said.
Lautem district commander Superintendent Marcos Sequeira Nunes praised the initiative.
“It’s a positive way to improve the PNTL into the future,” he said.
Member of Parliament Cesar Valente said the assessment system came on the back of recommendations by Commission B (defence, security and foreign affairs).
“We want to do this so they are dedicated in terms of discipline and they can carry out their duties solemnly and responsibly,” he said.
