Loko and Fatukono villages within Manatuto’s Laclo sub-district have not had access to electricity for the past 13 years and are instead forced to rely on other methods of lighting homes at night.

Laku Mesak village head Sergio Raimundo Perreira said the remote villages had a combined population of about 60.
“We use alternatives such as lighting fires and using kerosene lamps,” he said.
Perreira said he had raised the issue with the Secretary of State for Electricity through an annual proposal but had not received a response.
Member of Parliament Inacio Moreira said the problem was not confined to these two villages but occurred in most districts.
MP Moreira said the issue was a result of poor management on behalf of the government.
Laclo sub-district administration representative Jacinto dos Santos said the government was working towards connecting electricity in rural areas.
He called for patience from community members.
